Living our Fifth Principle…Use of the Democratic Process
The nationwide UU the Vote initiative is grounded in our Unitarian Universalist faith and Fifth Principle that supports the use of the democratic process in our society, as well as in our congregations.
Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice (UUSJ) is working with the Unitarian Universalist Association, congregations, and partner organizations to register voters, offer resources for reflection on justice issues, and encourage robust participation in the 2020 elections.
UUSJ has several guides to help your congregation become involved in this nationwide UU campaign with step-by-step information and resources. Select the guides from the navigation boxes above.
Time is ticking on our democracy! Tips to Start
- Start Early – Election primaries begin in February 2020. Begin organizing your congregation team now to mobilize voters. Check out the UU the Vote Team Building Toolkit for tips and on how to host a planning meeting.
- Know the Rules UU congregations need to follow to maintain their tax-exempt status.
- Connect with Partners to help engage with voters.
- Talk to Candidates – Attend events with informed questions to learn how each candidate will represent UU values. Use UUSJ’s Guide to UU Questions for Candidates 2020 to be informed.
