In Texas, a ground zero in the fight against injustice, we are now past the halfway mark in our state legislative session.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Summary:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Marginalized communities are doing the heavy lifting\u2014again. If you&#8217;re an ally, now is the time to step up and show up. The fight against anti-immigrant and anti-trans bills in Texas and other places across the U.S. needs all of us, because our liberation is bound together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you can\u2019t do everything, you can do something. What will you do?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The whole story:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I wasn\u2019t able to be at the Texas Capitol in person recently, at an essential juncture due to illness, but I was supporting from behind the scenes and watching the live broadcasts of multiple House committee hearings. I witnessed something that deeply moved me. One of the hearings was on HB 5580\u2014a bill that, like its companion SB 8, would allow local sheriffs across Texas to act as ICE agents, stopping anyone they choose, demanding proof of citizenship, and detaining them at will. In Texas, we are a Beta Test for what the federal government is looking to do elsewhere; what happens in Texas does not stay in Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What I saw, as testimony unfolded, was powerful: BIPOC leaders, immigrant organizers, and community members once again showing up with courage, truth, and love for their people. Some had waited all day to testify. Many spoke with determination and fire in their voices. These are the folks who are on the front lines\u2014again and again\u2014carrying the burden not only of surviving these policies but also of resisting them. Did you see the article UUSJ circulated last month? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2025\/03\/19\/trump-deportation-program-el-salvador\/?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=44444444-4444-4444-4444-444444444444&amp;eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=44444444-4444-4444-4444-444444444444\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re coming for immigrants first<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd the Trump administration is signaling that no one else might be safe, either.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I saw similar courage and heartbreak in hearings affecting our trans community. Bill after bill, designed to erase, endanger, or silence trans lives, has been met with testimony from those most impacted\u2014trans folks, their families, and the advocates who love them. Over and over, they showed up, despite the cost. Despite the exhaustion. Despite the trauma. They spoke with raw honesty and radical love, defending their right to exist and to thrive. What about the other article UUSJ circulated, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/default.salsalabs.org\/Ta23d2fe3-fc8d-4d62-a8d7-c36c0957f025\/f8864349-f6e6-432a-ba00-47f00654282a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Attack on Trans Rights Won\u2019t End There. Once legal rights begin to fall, they fall for everyone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In both of these spaces, I was left in awe\u2014and also grieving. The communities under attack are doing the heavy lifting, bearing the emotional and physical toll of advocacy and pushing back against systems that refuse to see their full humanity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To those who are showing up, thank you. Thank you! We love you!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you are directly impacted or an ally, whether you\u2019re at the Capitol or organizing from home, whether you&#8217;re calling, writing, donating, or praying\u2014you matter. Your efforts make a difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, I want to share a deep longing from my heart: [Continue Reading]<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I want to look around those hearing rooms and see just as many white folks as BIPOC folks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just as many cis folks as trans folks and their families.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I want our trans and immigrant siblings to feel surrounded, uplifted, and carried\u2014not just by those fighting for their own survival, but by allies who say: \u201cThis matters to me too.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because being real, our trans and immigrant communities are tired.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exhausted, actually.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exhausted from constantly having to prove their humanity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exhausted from being the ones always expected to speak up, show up, and fight back.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exhausted from carrying the burden of survival while also trying to protect their families, their dignity, and their dreams.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s be clear: this moment matters. It matters in Texas, it matters in Wisconsin. It matters from New York to New Mexico, from Oregon to Ohio, from California to Connecticut.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trans people in Texas, and elsewhere, are being persecuted by policy and erased in rhetoric.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ICE is, apparently, kidnapping immigrants off our streets across the United States in what is referred to as \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/the-lede\/the-mystery-of-ices-unidentifiable-arrests\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unidentifiable arrests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And those in power are laughing\u2014laughing\u2014about sending residents and citizens to prison camps with no hope of return.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are facing political cruelty that feels unimaginable, and yet it is here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When only those most impacted speak up, it becomes easier to dismiss their voices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when allies show up\u2014we shift the power in the room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We show that our liberation is bound together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We need you in this fight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not just for charity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not just for optics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But for collective liberation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may not be trans. You may not be an immigrant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the erosion of rights, the criminalization of compassion, the attacks on bodily autonomy and dignity\u2014these are warning bells for us all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the Director of Policy at Texas Civil Rights Project said in a recent email:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis fight is personal, and it demands all of us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas Unitarian Universalist Justice Ministry is showing up BIG with calls from across our state, dropping cards, testimony, and love\u2013 covering hearings on multiple issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re SO PROUD of everyone who\u2019s taken action\u2014and we\u2019re here to support our Texas activists and advocates when they are ready to take their first actions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the same applies to UU folks living in other states. You can connect with your UU State Action Network or local organizations if you do not have a State Action Network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can all connect with UUSJ.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you haven\u2019t yet gotten involved, know this: You don\u2019t have to do everything. But you can do something. (And you won&#8217;t be doing it alone.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pick an issue close to your heart\u2014and then pick another that doesn\u2019t directly affect you, but where your voice is needed as an ally.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Show up in whatever way you can.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make a call. Send a letter. Sit beside someone testifying. Offer encouragement. Be present.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You like the backend stuff? No problem! Provide childcare. Fill out spreadsheets. Track legislation. Train others. Write emails!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We all have a role in this movement.
