{"id":26348,"date":"2024-09-18T01:00:35","date_gmt":"2024-09-18T05:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/?p=26348"},"modified":"2024-09-26T16:26:48","modified_gmt":"2024-09-26T20:26:48","slug":"advocates-for-collective-liberation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/advocates-for-collective-liberation\/","title":{"rendered":"Advocates for Collective Liberation?"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_26247\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26247\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-26247\" src=\"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/pablo-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26247\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pablo DeJesus, Executive Director<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>If &#8220;nobody&#8217;s free until everybody&#8217;s free,&#8221; shouldn&#8217;t we be&#8230;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4>Advocates for Collective Liberation?<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our recent<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/2024-Annual-Report.pdf\"> <b>2024 Annual Report<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you may have noticed mention of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/collective-liberation-what-it-means\/?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=44444444-4444-4444-4444-444444444444\"> <b>Collective Liberation<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a term I&#8217;ve been using with, and introducing to, UUSJ supporters for several years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, while related to that mention, this post comes in happy response to the<a href=\"https:\/\/events.ringcentral.com\/events\/2024-un-multigen-seminar\/registration?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=44444444-4444-4444-4444-444444444444\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/events.ringcentral.com\/events\/2024-un-multigen-seminar\/registration?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=44444444-4444-4444-4444-444444444444\"> UU@UNO Intergenerational Seminar on September 21st &amp; 22nd, 2024<\/a>, where participants can &#8220;build a tomorrow where we are all free together,&#8221; and they use the tagline &#8220;Reimagining Tomorrow: Global Solidarity Beyond Empire.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I read that as collective liberation, and I am pleased. Here is why:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collective liberation is the idea that multiple oppressions are intertwined and that people must work together to end them. I think most of us agree. If I believed otherwise, I would not continue in our tradition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My interest in collective liberation, as it pertains to Unitarian Universalist activism, became serious over a decade ago when I took<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paulacolejones.com\/jubilee\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jubilee training with <strong>Paula Cole Jones<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a Church Council Steering Committee member and a consistent social justice volunteer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later, with UUSJ, my interest increased when our organization started to work on how to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Widening-Circle-September-12-v2.pdf?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=44444444-4444-4444-4444-444444444444\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">widen our circle of concern,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> what it means to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/message-from-uusj-board-chair-charlotte-jones-carroll\/?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=44444444-4444-4444-4444-444444444444\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">become a national organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, what it implies to have<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/thoughts-on-moral-owners\/?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=44444444-4444-4444-4444-444444444444\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moral Owners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and whether we should<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/8th-Principle-Motion-1.pdf?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=44444444-4444-4444-4444-444444444444\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voluntarily adopt the 8th Principle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This receptivity accelerated further as I discussed with our volunteers how best to express what UUSJ genuinely wants in our work toward mission fulfillment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collective liberation is a framework grounded in anti-racism organizing by Black Feminists. As such, it pulls from the liberatory traditions of the Black Church, builds upon lessons from the Civil Rights era, and translates a Feminist analytical frame for the Black Community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is explicitly linked to the 1977 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackpast.org\/african-american-history\/combahee-river-collective-statement-1977\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combahee River Collective Statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is generally associated with the 1996 pro-indigenous <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ejnet.org\/ej\/jemez.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (We can add anti-colonial here as well.) Over time it has been appreciated and further translated and transposed by other communities of color.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Famously, author <strong>Chris Crass<\/strong> successfully connects such ideas in his 2013 book<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Towards-Collective-Liberation-Anti-Racist-Organizing\/dp\/1604866543?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=44444444-4444-4444-4444-444444444444\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Towards Collective Liberation: Anti-Racist Organizing, Feminist Praxis, and Movement Building Strategy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collective liberation has a rich history of thought and organizing prowess behind it. It involves:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acknowledging oppression\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working together\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centering marginalized voices<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building community<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are all things we, as Unitarian Universalists, hold dear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, some members have found the concept large, amorphous, or unclear. Others shy away from the abolitionist underpinnings. A few members worry about ties to its slightly older cousin, liberation theology, in the Latin American context and a reliance on Marxist analysis. For many, even if they agree with the impulse, the emphasis on communitarianism, mutual responsibility, and mutual accountability can be jarring\u2013even scary\u2013to the individualism present-day Americans are encouraged to revere.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oddly, even though Jim Crow liberation theology informed <strong>Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King<\/strong>&#8216;s teachings, we Unitarian Universalists are somewhat hesitant to fully embrace collective liberation. Even as we hold King in high esteem, despite his example, this hesitancy remains present. Even though King pointed the way when he said, &#8220;I came to see for the first time that the Christian doctrine of love operating through the Gandhian method of nonviolence was one of the most potent weapons available to oppressed people in their struggle for freedom.&#8221; (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kinginstitute.stanford.edu\/king-papers\/documents\/pilgrimage-nonviolence\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pilgrimage to Nonviolence, 1960<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Key words<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Love. Method. Oppressed. People. Struggle. Freedom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can and should move beyond our reservations by simply putting them aside. Here is why:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can follow King&#8217;s prophetic and farseeing guidance on how to link faith to action. We should trust that collective liberation can be a method for our times and our social context that facilitates the universal doctrine of love. It can help us be more effective and impactful in the struggle for freedom among and with the oppressed. It can facilitate meaningful fellowship with the people we care for and about. That is how we build Beloved Community grounded in our faith tradition which, by necessity, brings Collective Liberation grounded in our secular lived experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collective liberation, in many ways, is simply a robust expression of the intersectional values we cherish as Unitarian Universalists. It provides a secular organizing context that aligns well with our faith-based grounding, reinforcing the natural fit of these concepts for our faith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, as Unitarian Universalists:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have pledged to widen the circle of concern.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We value learning about Root Causes and Root Harms.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We strive for fellowship and to be good allies.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We cherish covenantal behavior.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We look to place ourselves &#8220;eye-to-eye&#8221; and &#8220;shoulder-to-shoulder&#8221; with impacted and vulnerable communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When marginalized communities take up the LGBTQia refrain, &#8220;Nothing about us, without us,&#8221; we agree with the sentiment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our spirit, we know with certainty that &#8220;the people [truly] united shall never be defeated.&#8221; How could it be otherwise when we also believe that the moral arc of the universe bends toward justice?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We hold sacred the idea that Beloved Community can set our society free.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know that when pro-democracy forces have defied authoritarianism, faith actors have been a catalytic part of that moral response\u2014at least in our Western Hellenistic traditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of General Assembly 2024, Unitarian Universalists have agreed to &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uua.org\/pressroom\/press-releases\/new-language-core-values\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adopt new language on core religious values<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221; We have decided that love is the power that holds us together and is central to our shared values. The values we share include all the following, which we hold as inseparable and deeply interconnected: <\/span><b>Interdependence, Pluralism, Justice, Transformation, Generosity, and Equity. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uua.org\/uuagovernance\/committees\/article-ii-study-commission\/final-proposed-revision-article-ii\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read more on the Article II revision process<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These values, expressed within our faith tradition, are highly compatible with an emphasis on collective liberation. I am still learning and discerning, but a recent sermon by<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/all-souls.org\/past-services\/\"> <b>Rev. Anastassia Zinke<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A Covenantal Faith<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> makes me wonder if collective liberation is the covenantal force of love at work for social change and justice. At least, that is how her words landed for me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s beautiful to see that our Unitarian Universalist organizations are already teaching related faith-based concepts, providing a wealth of educational opportunities for our community to learn and engage with the concept of collective liberation. For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uuclimatejustice.org\/?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=44444444-4444-4444-4444-444444444444\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UU Climate Justice Revival, which will take place on September 28th and 29th, 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, promises that congregations will &#8220;Understand their role in the interdependent ecosystem of creating climate justice and collective liberation.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/druumm.org\/about-us\/mission-and-values\/?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=44444444-4444-4444-4444-444444444444\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DRUUMM cries out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: &#8220;We work towards collective liberation and healing.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recognize the reference to &#8220;flourishing for all&#8221; in the UU Ministry for Earth&#8217;s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uumfe.org\/?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=44444444-4444-4444-4444-444444444444\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organizational Vision<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrate the UU Women&#8217;s Federation<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uuwf.org\/about\/?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=44444444-4444-4444-4444-444444444444#mission\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">covenant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;for the purpose of mutually supporting, uplifting, and inspiring action in the movement for collective liberation.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notice<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sidewithlove.org\/?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=44444444-4444-4444-4444-444444444444\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side With Love<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;seeks to harness love&#8217;s power to stop oppression&#8221; and says, &#8220;the work that we do together to build a world in which all of us are free and thriving is interrelated.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catch that<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uurise.org\/about\/our-grounding\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UURISE declares<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, &#8220;We foster an organizational culture that celebrates equity and diversity, striving for collective liberation.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don&#8217;t forget that UUSC&#8217;s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uusc.org\/about-uusc\/mission\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mission<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> includes &#8220;partnering with those who confront unjust power structures and mobilizing to challenge oppressive policies.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Review a blog post by<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uuasheville.org\/staff-directory\/\"> <b>Rev. Claudia Jim\u00e9nez<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Minister of Faith Formation, UU Congregation of Asheville, NC,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uuasheville.org\/introducing-the-liberation-collective\/?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=44444444-4444-4444-4444-444444444444\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introducing the Liberation Collective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Unitarian Universalists get serious about our faith-based work for social justice, we often get serious about freedom, thriving, and flourishing\u2014as collective liberation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the forces of hate frequently deride collective liberation as &#8220;just&#8221; woke, hippy, kumbaya, critical race theory, mumbo-jumbo\u2014or communist propaganda, instead, it might just be the secular organizing basis for what Unitarian Universalists are about in spirit, as a matter of our evolving faith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collective liberation terrifies the forces of hate, anti-pluralism, and the beneficiaries of oppression. That is why they have mobilized the tools of authoritarianism and fascism in recent months and years to oppose a multi-cultural, multi-racial, inclusive, and pluralistic American democracy. The roots of that opposition go deep in our history and politics. See the comments by authors <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/YUtV818s8T8?si=nCRSaiEPuf5VlC5l\"><b>David Pepper<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/WM_gJzi3Efk?si=ZbLQdthBy-yGUPXZ\"><b>Steve Philip<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 for UUSJ.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At bottom, fear of a United States open to collective liberation for its citizens and residents is one reason we have such a consequential, vitriol-filled election in 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UUSJ is foremost a faith-based domestic-policy advocacy organization, so I aspire that we can be &#8220;Advocates for Collective Liberation.&#8221; I urge you to collaborate with us on this endeavor. Your participation is crucial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please explore how Unitarian Universalist organizations ask you to side with freedom, thriving, flourishing, interdependence and more. Let us live into our adopted values, with love at the center, and champion Collective Liberation, building toward Beloved Community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our democracy needs us now.
