{"id":25327,"date":"2023-07-18T22:30:21","date_gmt":"2023-07-19T02:30:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/?p=25327"},"modified":"2023-07-19T10:23:57","modified_gmt":"2023-07-19T14:23:57","slug":"25327-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/25327-2\/","title":{"rendered":"PR Afghan Adjustment Act"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> July 18, 2023<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Contact<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Pablo DeJes\u00fas | <\/span><a href=\"mailto:info@uusj.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">info@uusj.org<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>UUSJ Applauds The Reintroduction Of The Afghan Adjustment Act<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Congress should pass this bi-cameral, bi-partisan bill quickly<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Washington, D.C.<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice (UUSJ) strongly supports the Afghan Adjustment Act (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/senate-bill\/2324\/cosponsors?s=2&amp;r=1&amp;q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22Afghan+adjustment+act%22%5D%7D\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">S.2327<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/4627\/cosponsors?s=2&amp;r=1&amp;q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22Afghan%22%5D%7D\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> H.R.4627<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) reintroduced on July 14, 2023, by a bipartisan group of Senators and Representatives. This proposed legislation is directly aligned with our Unitarian Universalist (UU) values which emphasize the worth and dignity of every person and the importance of justice, equity, and compassion in all human relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enacting the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AAA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will honor the sacrifice and commitment of our Afghan allies. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Last session, our volunteers collaborated to explain to Congress that passing the Afghan Adjustment Act is<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a matter of honor, a debt<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that must be repaid. Congress failed to respond quickly, ignoring the moral injury suffered by veterans, Afghan allies, and the many volunteers across the United States resettling them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Pablo DeJes\u00fas, Executive Director, UUSJ<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, stated: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The veterans in our congregations have been deeply frustrated at the failure of Congress to pass the AAA in support of our long-time comrades in arms. Our veterans consider this to be a debt of honor. The volunteers in our congregations helping Afghans settle in the U.S. have been similarly perplexed by the inaction of Congress. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vets say, the volunteers say, and UUSJ says, \u2018Pass the AAA NOW!\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The AAA is popular among Americans. Meeting the promises made by veterans is honorable. Providing a pathway to legal permanent residency for Afghan evacuees is just. Allowing Afghan evacuees the chance to settle and rebuild their lives in the U.S. is fair. Providing protection mechanisms for at-risk Afghan allies left behind during the evacuation is compassionate. Deploying the gold standard in vetting is wise for national security. The AAA is, therefore, must-pass legislation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This bi-partisan, bi-cameral legislation has been designed to improve our national security and provide stability for our Afghan allies. It meets the pledges and promises of veterans and recognizes the valuable effort of Americans that have done the work of welcoming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur Unitarian Universalist faith calls us to recognize the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inherent worth and dignity of every person. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Welcoming the stranger and providing shelter to the vulnerable is a foundational way to live our faith.\u00a0 The season for politics and maneuvering is over. The time for provisions unrelated to the specific concerns of our Afghan allies is done. Hundreds of faith groups, non-profits, employers, Afghan-Americans, and veteran organizations have said it is time to end the moral injury and pass the Afghan Adjustment Act,\u201d <\/span><b>concluded DeJes\u00fas.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Afghan Adjustment Act was reintroduced in the <\/span><b>Senate <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Sen. Christopher A. Coons (D-DE), Senator Jerry Moran (R-KS), Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Senator Roger F. Wicker (R-MS), Senator Thomas Tillis (R-NC), Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Afghan Adjustment Act was also reintroduced in the <\/span><b>House of Representatives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA-1), Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR-3), Rep. Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ-6), Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO-6),\u00a0 Rep. Brian K. Fitzpatrick (R-PA-1), Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY-12), Rep. Maria E. Salazar (R-FL-27), Rep.
