{"id":22465,"date":"2020-05-22T11:50:07","date_gmt":"2020-05-22T15:50:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/?p=22465"},"modified":"2020-05-22T12:53:57","modified_gmt":"2020-05-22T16:53:57","slug":"the-poor-peoples-campaign-through-2020-and-beyond-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/the-poor-peoples-campaign-through-2020-and-beyond-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The Poor People\u2019s Campaign &#8212; Through 2020 and Beyond"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>The Poor People\u2019s Campaign (PPC) &#8212; Through 2020 and Beyond (updated)<strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19787 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/PPC_Logo-e1512076385259.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"138\" \/><\/strong><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may recall, both the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uua.org\">UUA<\/a><\/strong> and UUSJ have endorsed the <b>Poor People\u2019s Campaign<\/b>: A National Call for Moral Revival (PPC) in spring 2018, and now <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sidewithlove.org\/\">Side With Love<\/a> <\/strong>has joined in 2019. We have all committed to fighting: the distorted moral narrative, systemic racism, poverty, the war economy and ecological devastation as important intersectional and interfaith social justice work. <\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the <strong>COVID-19 pandemic<\/strong> makes clear the deficiencies of policies and programs to care for the poor and low income in our society, we UUs must live our values to uphold our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uua.org\/beliefs\/what-we-believe\/principles\"><strong>Seven Principles<\/strong><\/a>. During 2020 in particular we lift up the &#8220;<strong>5th Principle:\u00a0<\/strong>The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large&#8221; in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/issues\/defending-our-democracy\/\">defense of our democracy<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>UU Collaboration with PPC in brief:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PPC launched in 2017 and, in 2018 organized 40 Days of Moral Fusion Direct Action, the most expansive wave of nonviolent civil disobedience in modern history.\u00a0<b>\u00a0Hundreds of UUs participated nationwide.\u00a0<\/b>UUA\u00a0President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray and staff attended the kick-off and were arrested, several UU Ministers led key rallies and were arrested, a UUSJ Board Member was arrested\u00a0<\/span>(see below).<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019 the PPC convened a Moral Action Congress &#8211; Freedom School &#8211; Three Days of Moral Fusion Politics, educating more than 1,000 community leaders from across the nation and interviewing Presidential Candidates on their policies to care for the poor and disenfranchised.\u00a0<b>Many UUs from across the nation attended! UUSJ in-gathered those UUs participating<\/b>, and\u00a0<b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/?p=19224\">Rev. Abhi Janamanchi\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/b>opened the session (see below).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now in 2020, due to the pandemic, the PPC convenes a series of digital rallies as it prepares to mobilize and support the electoral participation of the 140 million poor and low-income folks of the United States. This is the most important action we can take, this year, to re-set the moral compass of our democracy. UUA\u00a0<strong>President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray<\/strong> has convened a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uua.org\/racial-justice\/poor-peoples-campaign\"><strong>UU council<\/strong><\/a> to aid this work, which aligns with the goals of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uua.org\/justice\/vote2020\"><strong>UU the Vote<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>In 2021 <strong>UUSJ<\/strong> will help hold the elected leadership of our nation to account in its policies and programs. With a new Congress comes new opportunities.
