in Washington, DC, for inspiration, outreach, education, and action on the climate emergency and the need for climate justice.\u00a0 We came from all over the country at a critical moment, a few days before the global Climate Strike and the start of the United Nations Climate Conference.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conference was the result of cooperation from all corners of the UU world, and that is itself one of the most important takeaways\u2014this is a challenge we all acknowledge cannot wait and that requires us to work together.\u00a0 At this year\u2019s General Assembly we passed an Action of Immediate Witness, \u201cBuild the Movement for a Green New Deal,\u201d that called on us to \u201crebuild our political and economic structures to prioritize the well-being of future generations.\u201d\u00a0 This conference was a contribution to that goal.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Day One almost 150 of us gathered at All Soul\u2019s to hear messages of faith and inspiration.\u00a0 On Day Two we met at St. Mark\u2019s Episcopal on Capitol Hill to discuss the Green New Deal (GND) and hear from partners in this effort.\u00a0 And on Day Three we went to the offices of over 50 US Senators to carry our message about the need for a just transition to a fossil fuel free world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can\u2019t do justice to all the great speakers and conversations, but here are some of the highlights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21086\" 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0We lifted ourselves up by hearing from fellow UUs who are doing the work of creating climate justice.\u00a0 Their example tells us that our values and our faith need to be active in the world, and can sustain us in this difficult work.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UU Ministers <\/span><b>Rob Hardies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Dr<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Rob Keithan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>Amanda Weatherspoon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><b>Paula Cole Jones<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from UUA\u2019s Central East Region; <\/span><b>Senowa Mize-Fox <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climatejusticealliance.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate Justice Alliance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><b>Bev Harp<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a UU and leader in the DC <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunrisemovement.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunrise Movement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><b>Pablo DeJesus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><b>Aly Tharp<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uumfe.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UU Ministry for Earth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; and UUA President <\/span><b>Susan Frederick Gray<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (via recorded message) made clear how our UU values call us to respond to the climate crisis, and gave us wonderful examples of how we can make a difference.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Reverend Susannah Tuttle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Director of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ncipl.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Carolina Interfaith Power and Light<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, urged us to make sure the GND contains the moral \u2018must-haves\u2019 captured in the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/WISCEE-Faith-Principles-Green-New-Deal-March-1-2019-w_endorsers.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faith Principles for a Green New Deal,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d including compassion and fairness towards workers and communities dependent on fossil fuels, and \u201csacred dialogue\u201d across political, geographic, racial and cultural boundaries.\u00a0 She instructed us to go home and \u201cwork from your corner\u201d by mapping our local communities and their resources.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We heard <\/span><b>Levi Draheim<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a charismatic 12-year old UU from Florida, describe how his love for his barrier island home led him to become active in the climate movement.\u00a0 Levi is the youngest plaintiff in a constitutional lawsuit, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourchildrenstrust.org\/juliana-v-us\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juliana vs. US<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that accuses the US government of shirking its constitutional duty to protect fundamental rights.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21085\" 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 Creating climate justice requires working with people on the front lines of the climate crisis.\u00a0 At the conference we heard from people who expanded our horizons.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Julian Brave Noisecat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a member of the Canim Lake Band Tsq\u2019escen, told us the GND must honor the earth and be built with and for indigenous communities.\u00a0 The struggle against the Dakota Access and Keystone pipelines continues.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Reverend Leo Woodberry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pastor of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newalphacdc.com\/kingdom-living-temple\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kingdom Living Temple<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in South Carolina and a Sierra Club activist, described the plight of poor African-American families living near the coast whose houses need to be elevated in the face of recurrent flooding.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Alison Hirsh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, policy director at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seiu.org\/2019\/06\/seiu-passes-resolution-in-support-of-green-new-deal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Service Employees International Union<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, explained why the poor, minority members of her union voted to support the GND: because from their experience at the bottom, they know we need systematic economic change.\u00a0 Her advice: even though today\u2019s politics are inhospitable, keep educating and planning, so that when the tide shifts, you\u2019re ready.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21084\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21084\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img DC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Education.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 Effective action rests on a solid understanding of the complex political, economic, and social environment that we need to change.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Basav Sen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ips-dc.org\/our-work\/climate-justice\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute for Policy Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helped us think through the complexity of today\u2019s climate challenges, including the positions of key countries.\u00a0 Canada and Australia, for instance, are both huge energy exporters and will be reluctant to take measures that are sure to be unpopular at home.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Julian Brave Noisecat <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">put on his hat as Director of Green New Deal Strategy at the think tank <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataforprogress.org\/green-new-deal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data for Progress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to tell us why we need a mass movement that is combined with disciplined organization.\u00a0 He urged us not to waste time trying to win over skeptical politicians, but to pursue an \u2018outside-in\u2019 strategy to pressure lawmakers by making the GND big and popular.\u00a0 Think tanks, academic experts, and congressional staff are fleshing out the GND and starting to put together specific pieces of legislation. Elected officials need to hear now from everyone, not just young people.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Emily Wirzba<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcnl.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friends Committee on National Legislation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>Ruth M. Ivory-Moore<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Program Director for Environment and Energy for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elca.org\/Our-Work\/Publicly-Engaged-Church\/Advocacy\/Environment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evangelical Lutheran Church in America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ran down the political state of play.\u00a0 While the near-term picture is bleak, they advised us to shape a positive narrative about the climate crisis and the GND to give people hope.\u00a0 There are some encouraging signs: the US is still in the Paris Agreement and the House passed a bill prohibiting us from leaving; there is a new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/citizensclimatelobby.org\/bipartisan-climate-working-group-forms-in-senate-led-by-sens-coons-braun\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bipartisan Senate caucus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on climate; and so far six bills have been introduced to put a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcnl.org\/updates\/carbon-pricing-as-a-solution-to-climate-change-2235\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">price on carbon,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and several of them have bipartisan support.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21087\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21087\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21087 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/48804911231_e25d034977_o-420x315.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/48804911231_e25d034977_o-420x315.jpg 420w, https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/48804911231_e25d034977_o-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/48804911231_e25d034977_o-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21087\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">UUs upon exit from Sen. Warren&#8217;s office.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Action<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 After UUSJ instructed us in the best practices of effective advocacy, on Tuesday conference-goers joined local members of UUSJ\u2019s Advocacy Corps and fanned out to over 50 Senate offices. \u00a0 They carried 990 letters from 35 UU congregations around the country\u2014yeah for you!\u2014with clear messages:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the sake of our children and grandchildren, and the health of our planet, transform our economy to net-zero carbon pollution by 2050.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implement a just transition that respects indigenous peoples and protects the jobs and communities impacted by change.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Act now to extend tax credits for solar and wind energy, establish a realistic price for carbon, and fund projects to increase climate resilience in the new Highway Bill.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After this, the Senate can have no doubt about where UUs stand and how passionate we are about this issue!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21088 alignright\" this:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tide is turning!<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 Youth activism, enthusiasm for the GND, and the reality of our warming planet are having an impact.\u00a0 Leaders and politicians are starting to take notice.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UUs can make a difference.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 What we say, and do&#8211;and who we do it with\u2014really matter.\u00a0 If we 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work hard, work now, work at every level.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 Tomorrow is too late.\u00a0 The future is being decided today.\u00a0 Everything we do, whether in states or in Washington, in our congregations or in the streets, should work together and be reinforcing.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure
