And a realization of personal conviction that \u201cno child should go to bed without a parent or loved one to tuck them in at night.\u201d This came to my mind after attending an April 2018 conference held by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uua.org\/international-justice\/un\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unitarian Universalists United Nations Office<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cA Just Migration for All,\u201d where I learned \u00a0ten thousand or more migrant children remain separated from their parents or families in government detention facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The immediate answer was a manifestation of my concern at my congregation <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uucolumbia.net\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UU Congregation of Columbia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MD. My friends and I hung up children\u2019s pajamas, to call attention to the fact that the government is violating a decades-old, court-approved agreement that migrant children should not be detained for more than 20 days and must be released to their parents or a family member.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that success and encouragement, now I am asking UUs to help further this call by joining us June 9, 2019 on the National Mall. Refer us for helpful partnerships, help us get connected to other supporters and contacts. Post to our<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/WhereAreTheChildrenUSA\/\"><b>Facebook page<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to show support and updates on your efforts so we know and feel that participants are part of a growing movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make financial contributions. Help us to fund this project with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/wherearethechildrenusa?\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contributions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through gofundme. We have an estimated cost of $3,000 for June 9 and are seeking support. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is what my friends and I have planned for the Where Are the Children Campaign, as part of International Children\u2019s Day on June 9, 2109. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our national project is a statement of our concern, often referred to as a witness action. Modeled after the AIDS quilt of a previous generation, we envision hundreds of pairs of children\u2019s pajamas hung on a clotheslines on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. representing all the children separated from their families. \u00a0The event takes place all day on June 9 between 12th and 14th Streets, NW, Washington, D.C. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the first effort at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uucolumbia.net\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UU Congregation of Columbia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MD, my minister, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uucolumbia.net\/people\/paige-getty\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rev. Paige Getty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, signaled our congregation\u2019s support with a sermon on \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uucolumbia.net\/sermons\/when-crisis-calls-advancing-just-migration-for-all\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just Migration for All<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d Shortly afterwards, Indivisible Howard County, part of a nationwide progressive movement to preserve American democracy, asked us if they could help elevate this project to national attention with a planned artistic display on the National Mall like the AIDS quilt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20592 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Alex_Kohn_WhereAreTheChildren_April2019_20180622_161507-420x236.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Alex_Kohn_WhereAreTheChildren_April2019_20180622_161507-420x236.jpeg 420w, https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Alex_Kohn_WhereAreTheChildren_April2019_20180622_161507-100x55.jpeg 100w, https:\/\/uusj.net\/wp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Alex_Kohn_WhereAreTheChildren_April2019_20180622_161507.jpeg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal of this next phase is to raise awareness of the lost, separated and detained children held by the Department of Health and Human Services, Customs and Border Control. And to move beyond one congregation, one county, one community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I believe the separation and detention of children is traumatic and should be stopped immediately. \u00a0Instead, our government should make reuniting these families a top priority. And the impact of hundreds of pajamas hanging together, with large banners proclaiming, \u201cWhere Are the Children?\u201d and \u201cDon\u2019t Separate Families,\u201d will be powerful. \u00a0We hope it will inspire people to demand justice for these families. We also hope that any family separated will see, and hear, that there are people who care. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please help us with pajama donations. \u00a0The more pajamas we can gather, the more rows we can add. The more powerful the visual impact and statement of concern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After June 9 on the National Mall, we\u2019ll offer this project as a traveling display.
