It threatened environmental justice communities nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>We are proud of how our volunteers, partners, and allies showed up:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>rallies in DC<\/li>\n<li>pressure in West Virginia<\/li>\n<li>coordinated advocacy<\/li>\n<li>faith-rooted messaging<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Together with the Poor People\u2019s Campaign and People Versus Fossil Fuels, we helped make Senator Manchin\u2019s position untenable \u2014 forcing negotiations that ultimately enabled passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). This was not UUSJ acting alone; it was collective power. And while the IRA had significant flaws, especially for environmental justice communities, it demonstrated that <strong>we can shift the stance of public figures when we act in coalition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today, we pause to say thank you.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">What Was the Manchin &#8220;Zombie Bill&#8221;?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The term &#8220;zombie bill&#8221; refers to Senator Joe Manchin&#8217;s repeated attempts in 2021\u20132022 to attach a controversial permitting reform package to must-pass legislation. Although the proposal failed multiple times, it kept returning \u2014 &#8220;coming back to life&#8221; \u2014 which is how it earned its nickname.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The permitting deal was framed as a pragmatic compromise to advance energy infrastructure. But environmental justice communities, frontline organizations, and many faith-based partners raised serious concerns. They warned that the proposal would:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Fast-track fossil fuel projects in already overburdened communities<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Limit public input and weaken environmental review processes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Accelerate pollution in sacrifice zones<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Undermine long-term climate goals<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">For UUSJ, the issue was not partisan. It was about solidarity with impacted communities and the moral imperative to protect those most harmed by environmental injustice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Stopping the permitting deal required broad coalition work:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080;\">environmental justice leaders<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080;\">frontline community organizations<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080;\">national climate partners<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080;\">faith-based networks<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800080;\">and persistent volunteer engagement<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">UUSJ played a supporting, catalytic role \u2014 mobilizing volunteers, showing up at rallies, and adding a faith-rooted voice to a much larger collective effort. Together, these partners helped make the permitting deal politically untenable, preventing its passage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The &#8220;zombie bill&#8221; story is a reminder that meaningful victories often come from shared courage, persistent collaboration, and many hands working together.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Help us cross the halfway mark.
