We&#8217;re looking for new members for our Board of Trustees to help us continue building a dynamic, effective social justice advocacy organization that represents our UU values at the U.S. Capitol and White House!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We&#8217;re looking for people with great communication and collaboration skills, a passion for social justice, a commitment to UU values, and an interest in or experience making federal policy. We want to make our nation more just, compassionate, and sustainable. Experience with organizations in transition is a plus. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marginalized and disenfranchised folks to the front!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><i>What we do:<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advocate, educate, and witness at the national level for just, compassionate, and sustainable federal policies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focus on priorities (currently four): economic justice, immigration justice, environment and climate justice, and healthy democracy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meet with Members of the U.S. Congress or their staff to advocate on priority UUSJ issues (virtually and more often during the pandemic)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solicit letters from UUs around the country to Senators and Congresspersons on our priority issues via our<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cWrite Here! Write Now!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (\u201cWHWN\u201d) program and deliver them to Congressional Staff<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issue \u201cAction Alerts\u201d on policy issues, asking for emails to the U.S. Congress \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Make public comments on federal regulations and rules while organizing related campaigns for individuals and congregations where possible<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Join and help author sign-on letters within the coalitions UUSJ is participating in services to Mission and our issues of policy concern<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organize briefings, seminars, webinars, conferences, and Town Hall meetings to discuss federal public policy issues and train UUs as volunteer advocates<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marshal for and participate in witness events for federal public policy issues<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work in coalition with other faith-based and impacted community groups<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b><i>Recent achievements:<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Defeating the anti-immigrant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org\/research\/analysis-senate-border-bill\">Senate Border Bill proposal of 2024<\/a>\u00a0within The Emergency National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/815\">H. R. 815<\/a>) during 2024. (Subsequent iterations may emerge.)<\/li>\n<li>Passage of bipartisan legislation to reform and modernize the Electoral Count Act of 1887 within the Fiscal Year 2023 Omnibus Appropriations bill; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/2617\">Title X &#8212; Budgetary Effects, Division P&#8211;<i>Electoral Count Reform and Presidential Transition Improvement<\/i><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Passage and greening of the bipartisan Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 2022 as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/7776\">Division H, Title LXXXI of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2023 (Public Law 117-263)<\/a>, with particular emphasis on Sections 106, 114, 116 and 133<\/li>\n<li>Passage of the <a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/5376\/text\">Inflation Reduction Act of 2022<\/a>, having worked on the issues as part of Build Back Better negotiations. As well as early Biden Administration actions, including many items we supported (directly and\/or via coalitions): e.g., Climate Rollback Executive Order (including review of Keystone XL), rejoining Paris Climate Agreement, repealing Muslim immigration ban, preserving DACA for \u201cdreamers,\u201d adopting Economic Relief EO (Medicaid, Pell grants, SNAP, &amp; unemployment insurance), and introducing immigration and election reform bills. approve public policy positions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appoint, evaluate, and terminate the Executive Director of UUSJ<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approve policies and procedures for the operation of UUSJ\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approve the budget and membership dues of UUSJ<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elect new Trustees and elect Board Officers for any given year<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designate both board committee chairs and members for any given year<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b><i>What UUSJ board members do:<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use their experience and skills to support UUSJ\u2019s Mission, Vision, Values, and implementation\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Establish policies for UUSJ and provide guidance to the Executive Director\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Measure the Executive Director\u2019s implementation of Board policies and progress towards achieving the Ends and goals of UUSJ<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prepare for and attend (in person or online) four or more Board meetings per year (approx. 2.5 hours each)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serve on one or more Standing Committees (Finance, Membership, Development, &amp; Nominating) with occasional meetings (in person or online)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">May serve as an officer (Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer, Secretary) with occasional meetings as an Executive Committee, handling only \u201croutine administrative matters.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help with fundraising, including events (time commitment and role may vary).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Develop and maintain relationships with moral owners\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">May participate in, but may not lead, advocacy or other UUSJ events;
