Occupy Wall Street<\/b><\/a>\u00a0(organization\/website) . . . a people-powered movement that began on September 17, 2011 in Liberty Square in Manhattan\u2019s Financial District, and has spread to over 100 cities in the United States and actions in over 1,500 cities globally. #ows is fighting back against the corrosive power of major banks and multinational corporations over the democratic process, and the role of Wall Street in creating an economic collapse that has caused the greatest recession in generations. The movement is inspired by popular uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia, and aims to fight back against the richest 1% of people that are writing the rules of an unfair global economy that is foreclosing on our future.<\/p>\n

OccupyWallSt.org is the oldest and most trusted online resource for the Occupy Movement. We were founded on July 14th, 2011 when Justine Tunney organized a scrappy group of anarchists to take the initiative in organizing a\u00a0call to action published by Micah White in Adbusters magazine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

We use media to call for social, economic and environmental justice. Occupy Washington DC\/Freedom Plaza<\/b><\/a>\u00a0(organization\/website)\u00a0 began in early 2011 when dozens of activists from different parts of the United States came together to organize a people\u2019s occupation of Freedom Plaza in Washington, DC. Inspired by the Arab Spring and modeled after the Indignados Movement in Spain, we sought to transform the country into one that put human needs before corporate greed, by directly occupying public spaces. After several months of behind-the-scenes planning, we launched our original website (october2011.org) on June 4th, 2011, and called ourselves the October 2011 movement (following the naming tradition used in Spain). In our article,\u00a0History is Knocking<\/a>\u00a0we wrote, \u201cNow is the time to join together and unite our struggles in sustained acts of nonviolent resistance\u201d and we called for \u201csustained and nonviolent mass resistance in Washington, D.C.\u201d Many of the initial organizers produced\u00a0a video<\/a>\u00a0that called for people to occupy the nation\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n

When Occupy Wall Street spread across the country that Fall, we changed our name to\u00a0Occupy Washington, DC<\/em>\u00a0at Freedom Plaza to indicate that we were part of that movement. We had previously endorsed AdBusters\u2019\u00a0call to action<\/a>\u00a0and also signed a statement of solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street organizers,\u00a0U.S. Day of Rage<\/a>. Many of our state and local coordinators in 36 states organized local occupations as part of the Movement.<\/p>\n

In June, 2013 we launched our new website, PopularResistance.org, importing all the articles and posts from our original website and adding many more tools and resources for strengthening the movement.<\/p>\n
