UUs across the nation are getting organized to join with the Poor People’s Campaign– a National Call for a Moral Revival — beginning in May and continuing for 40 days. Endorsed by the Unitarian Universalist Association and joined by dozens of other faith groups, the Campaign features witness and advocacy events beginning on Mother’s Day, May 13, and continuing through June 23, concluding with a mass mobilization in Washington, DC. Up-to-date details are available at www.uua.org/poorpeoplescampaign, including history, principles, weekly themes, and demands, as well as a UU-specific sign-up to participate in the campaign.
UUA President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray will participate in the direct action in Washington, DC on May 14 with other denominational and national leaders. UUA is asking UU clergy and lay leaders to come to DC on that day to both support and take action themselves, and calling UUs to come on May 21 as part of our UU Love Resists campaign, as the theme of the second week is on resisting mass incarceration, mass deportation, and voter suppression. In this region, Rev. Amanda Poppi and Rev. Abhi Janamanchi are on the DC Campaign Coordinating Team. Rev. Amy Williams Clark is on the MD campaign team. Rev. Robin Tanner is supporting the VA campaign. To learn more about UU-specific actions and gatherings, sign up for the special Facebook page.
Campaign planners expect to mobilize tens of thousands in weekly witness and non-violent moral fusion events critical to supporting the advancement of lower income families. In addition to events in Washington DC, actions at 39 State capitals are planned around weekly themes. To learn more about UU-specific actions and gatherings, sign up for the special Facebook page.
