Noticeable UU support for Haiti
During early April 2024 UUSJ joined an Interfaith Immigration Coalition (IIC) letter with more than 250 Faith Leaders and Organizations, directed to the White House and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, on the matter of the cirisis in Haiti.
The letter urges the Administration to take immediate humanitarian actions: extend and redesignate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti as well as Special Student Relief, pause deportations, and expand key lawful migration pathways.
The letter also expresses concern about reports on the potential use of Guantanamo Bay to detain Haitians fleeing the crisis amid ongoing repatriation flights to the belabored country.
UUSJ proudly helped review and approve the interfaith statement and gathered 10 UU organizations, congregations, churches, or fellowships, along with 14 UU ministers, lay leaders, and staff, to join the letter.
