Does your congregation want to help prevent plastic bags and other thin plastic materials from ending up in our oceans, landfills and in the stomachs of our wildlife? UUCF Climate Action Group (CAG) is partnering with Unity of Fairfax, 350 Fairfax and Woodburn Homes Civic Association, to launch a campaign to send these items to Trex, a composite decking company, that will reuse them rather than discarding them. Contact Loretta Rowe for more information or to learn how UUCF developed the partnership and campaign.
With the move to single stream recycling, many “recycled” materials are ending up in landfills because local recycling companies won’t accept packaging and thin plastics such as plastic grocery bags, LDPE/HDPE plastic wrap, newspaper bags, bread bags, product wrap, cereal liners, food storage bags, ice bags, pellet bags, produce bags, dry cleaning bags, grocery bags, case overwrap, packaging air pillows and salt bags. Partners are collecting these items in special recycling bins and the Trex Company program is donating a plastic outdoor bench for each 500 pounds of plastic submitted.
