I started working as an activist on issues related to democracy more than 10 years ago — just before the disastrous Citizens United decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, and just before joining a UU congregation in my home state of New Jersey.

Initially, I focused on the problem of big money in politics, which was surreptitiously turning our country into an oligarchy.  In my activities, I have always looked for actions that could have the greatest impact on public policy, or at least on public opinion.  This is such a critical time as we try to save democracy in our country.

This in a nutshell is why I joined the Democracy Action team of UUSJ in the summer of 2021. Action. Impact.

Quite a few of the organizations I have worked with spend a lot of time talking, motivating, reflecting, etc.  What I like most about the Democracy Action Team is that we take action with people in power, such as members of Congress.  And we do it in a highly professional, carefully constructed manner.  I have to believe that makes a difference.

Finally, in this Thanksgiving season, I feel gratitude and pride for Unitarian Universalists everywhere, who work tirelessly to make a better world.
