As Biden Withdraws, Our Focus Remains The Same

We want Americans to vote and need voters to defend our democracy

Washington, D.C. — Following reports and announcement that President Joe Biden has exited the 2024 presidential campaign, Pablo DeJesús, Executive Director of UUSJ, stated, “With President Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 race today, we ask our supporters to stay focused on the stakes in this election for our democracy and our communities.

At the core of this year’s election are urgent choices about our commitment to a healthy U.S. democracy, its promise, the freedom it offers everyone, and its ability to deliver liberation for all its people. As Biden withdraws, our focus remains the same: we want Americans to vote and need voters to defend our democracy.

UUSJ does not endorse candidates. We focus on economic inequity, environment and climate, immigration, and healthy democracy. These are nearly universal intersectional public goods that benefit from the influence of Unitarian Universalist values in their expression.

Despite today’s candidate shake-up and the uncertainty that will follow, we remain concerned about public figures who playfully flirt with a preference for dictatorship, an ultra-conservative movement tilting towards autocracy, a Congress hobbled by extremism and anti-liberalism, a U.S. Supreme Court that has begun to make ‘Kings’ of Presidents, and the continued reemergence of Christian Nationalism in America.

We ring the metaphorical Revere Bell. We continue to raise the alarm. We center the threat to the common good and our liberties. We reject the false narratives offered this election season.

We ask our membership to continue encouraging eligible voters of every age, race, and zip code to participate and pray they will side with love–our issues.

The next President needs to be able and willing to lead for the good of every American, everybody, not just a select few.

We wish President Biden well as he concludes his term and ends his active service to our nation, but his withdrawal from the candidate race changes little for our focus on root causes, issues, and consequences.

We will seek to remain true to our Unitarian Universalist values.”
