Your membership helps UUSJ provide you with regular updates such as our monthly eNews, and with timely notices of opportunities to participate in UUSJ activities and events. Your donation is also needed to organize, research, conduct meetings, and “be at the table” to advance UU principles before Congress. To this end, UUSJ volunteers and staff have taken action to:
- Expand its Write Here! Write Now! Congressional letter-writing campaign, including the July focus to preserve Black lives by urging passage of key provisions of the bill authored by the Congressional Black Caucus;
- Support the UUSJ Capitol Hill Advocacy Corps that carries the UU message via virtual meetings with Congressional staff during the pandemic;
- Mobilize voters and oppose voter suppression through our joint programs with the Reeb Project for Voting Rights and UU the Vote;
- Engage in witness activities and stand for social, economic, immigration, and environmental justice for impacted communities; and,
- Build UU congregation capacity by sponsoring citizen advocacy training programs such as our “Storytelling For Advocacy.
Help UUSJ continue to spread the word for UU Values!
We have been working hard to become more relevant and effective than ever. Over the last few years:
- We have founded the Advocacy Corps, which visits Congressional offices regularly, has handed Congress over 11,000 letters from UU’s, and has had nearly 500 meetings with Congressional offices, explaining UU values and positions to them, calling their attention to bills incorporating those values.
- Our Write Here! Write Now! (WHWN) and Action Alert efforts are generating letters and emails to Congress from across the US.
- As part of a multi-year strategic planning project, we have a new board representing multiple generations, racial backgrounds, nations of origin, and geographic areas, all charged with embodying a new vision.
- We are working to develop the necessary relationships with frontline groups to support environmental/climate justice, immigrants, racial and economic equity, voting rights, and democracy.
- Although we cannot claim full credit, our efforts have borne fruit—Congress recently enacted all or parts of eight issues that were subjects of WHWN’s in the past couple of years (details in articles cited below).
Donations from individuals make up most of UUSJ’s budget. Although any donation makes you an individual member, UUSJ suggests $60 for those who can afford it, and more significant donations enable more advocacy, as the donation page clarifies. Your new or renewing membership is critical to preserving the ever-present national voice for UU values in Washington.
