Next Steps – Poor People’s Campaign – Action on Monday May 21st

RE: Next Steps on the Poor People’s Campaign & Next Monday’s Action on May 21st

Thanks for your support and participation in the Poor People’s Campaign. Now that we’ve had a successful launch we need to keep up the momentum and build our base!

Here’s my report and an invitation in a special edition of Just Acts: Next Steps on the Poor People’s Campaign—Join Me on May 21st.  (If you would like to subscribe to Just Acts, sign up here.) It includes an Op Ed from UUA President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray titled I Got Arrested Today While Praying the US Finally Confronts Poverty and a blog post from Rev. Michael Crumpler, UUA LGBTQ & Intercultural Programs Manager, Arrested for Justice, on being arrested for the first time in his life and his reflections on the experience of doing so with the Campaign.

I will be taking direct action on Monday, May 21st, and hope you can join me in Washington, DC or at your state capital. This coming week’s theme is Connecting Systemic Racism and Economic Justice – Voting Rights and Just Immigration – issues that we UUs have been working on for a long time and care about deeply.

There are 5 more weeks of non-violent moral fusion direct action and all will have the same format of a Monday rally/press conference at 2 p.m. followed by direct action. Please note however that there will NOT be rallies and actions on Memorial Day. That week the rally and action will be on Tuesday, May 29th.

Most states will offer an 11 am direct action training on Mondays for the action that day but there is some variation among states so be sure to check for your state and to find out where the training will be (check for your state Poor Peoples Campaign Facebook page or with your UU State Action Network if there is one in your state .

If you are coming to Washington, DC to take direct action you will need to be at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 21st to be trained. Be sure to have your ID, $50 in cash, and a water bottle and power bars or some kind of snack. You will receive lunch after the training and before the rally. It’s also a good idea to have a good breakfast as it may be a while before you eat again after lunch.

The rally and press conference will be at 2 pm on the US Capitol Lawn (Zone 9 – it’s the lawn on the Capitol Building (Congress) side on  First Street between the Capitol Building and the Supreme Court & Library of Congress).

On Sundays, in many states and in Washington, DC there will be a mass moral meeting/revival.  In DC it will be from 6-8 pm at National City Christian Church.

You can also see a livestream of the Washington, DC Sunday revival with the Co-Chairs of the Campaign Rev. William Barber and Rev. Liz Theoharis and the rally and action on the Poor People’s Campaign website and facebook page.

To stay connected with UUs engaged in the campaign visit www.uua.org/poorpeoplescampaign and join the UUs & the Poor Peoples Campaign Facebook Group. Let us know what’s happening in your states and share your feedback and questions!

Please feel free to contact me directly as well if you need further information, have questions, and feedback as well.

Forward Together! — Susan
