INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION

The African Rights Activists Group (ARAG) is seeking a volunteer to develop the human rights defenders program and to work with staff to organize for the LGBTI caucus of the refugee congress. The volunteer will help in drafting letters, design and publish online/monthly newsletter, design the website, write the budget, develop the relationship with different pro Bono law firms. The volunteer will also assist in following up on new advocacy strategies to lobby the State department and Office of refugee resettlement for information collection on LGBTI refugees for better resettlement outcomes, encourage the disclosure or self-identification of LGBTI refugees, establish data collection to better meet the particular needs of LGBTI refugees, cultural competency for Case Aids and ESL teachers dealing with LGBTI refugees, and connecting LGBTI refugees and the American LGBT community.

 

ARAG’s volunteer service offer direct exposure to the workings of a national human rights organization, interaction with the State department Bureau of population, refugees and migration; Office of Refugee Resettlement, LGBTI Caucus of the Refugee Congress, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees officials, and opportunities to attend special events relating to the human rights defenders and refugees.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated and has demonstrated the ability to deal with refugees and LGBTI. Candidates should be available to volunteer from the Washington, D.C office for a minimum of six hours a week. Computer skills (i.e. Microsoft office, internet applications and little web designing skills) are required.
